Kiautas II

Kiautas (Plant shell in Lithuanian) vase holds a special place in dega collection of vases. It is one of the first dega works created by experimenting with ash glaze. The shape of the vase resembles a dried-up plant shell, thrown in the heated sand of the beach. Remains of such unrecognizable plants, perhaps coming from overseas, washed by salt water and dried in the hot sun, the shore preserves many. Their interesting, stagnant forms, small twists and bends raise the intension to immortalize them in a clay format - somewhat stylized and functional. Kiautas represents a total connection between sustainable ceramic art and nature. The vase is made of white chamotte clay and is covered with birch ash, telling a story of living closely with the natural world, coming from it and organically returning to it someday. Birch ash pourings are like markings of a core of ceramics - it is a real art of the earth, controlled by the elements and laws of natural world, passing the breath of Mother Nature with the help of human hands.

This one-off work is entirely handbuilt & handcrafted. The surface is glazed with birch ash. High-fired at 1220°C. Suitable for placing dried flora. Not recommended for water storage.

Dimensions: H 84cm x Ø 27cm
